Wildfires in the US state of California have destroyed more than 1,000 homes and have killed at least six people, making it the fourth-worst wildfire in the state's history.

A body of a man was found in Monterey County inside a charred vehicle near the fire area, though some reports suggest the police are investigating it as a possible case of suicide.

On Monday, California governor Jerry Brown requested President Barack Obama to declare a national disaster so as to help victims of the Valley fire receive federal aid.

The Valley fire and Butte fire in California have destroyed hundreds of structures, rendering thousands homeless.
