Disappointing end to the day!

India women's hockey team could have played better in the final quarter, in which Japan completely dominated. They ran down the clock (after taking the lead in the dying minutes of the third quarter) without much trouble.

The Indian struggled to keep possession throughout the match and the final quarter was a poor reflection of their ability.

The day ends with a silver medal to the women's hockey team.

Friday started with the disappointing news of Vikas Krishan pulling out of his middleweight semi-final with an injury. The Indian men's squash team were beaten by Hong Kong 2-0 in the semi-final.

However, sailors did India proud by bagging three medals.

Boxer Amit Panghal worked his way into the light flyweight final while the women's squash team will be going for golden glory tomorrow. They had stunned a star-studded Malaysian team in the semi-final today.

India men's hockey team will be up against Pakistan in the bronze medal tomorrow, the country's last day at the Games.

Hockey women's final: India finish with silver after losing 2-1 to Japan

Japan create history, win their first-ever women's hockey gold at the Asiad. The Indian women's 36-year-long wait for the yellow metal continues.

More importantly, India miss an opportunity to seal a direct berth for the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.

They had reached the final for the first time after 1998 in the ongoing Games. However, they were bettered by a brilliant defensive display from Japan, who win the hard-fought final 2-1.

Japan went ahead with a crucial goal in the third quarter and put pressure on Rani Rampal's women.

India were quite ordinary in the fourth quarter even as Japan crowded their defence and made umpteen interruptions.

Rani and Vandhana missed a relatively difficult opportunity towards the end. Barring the missed-chance, there was nothing much for the Indians in the final quarter. Top effort from the Japanese, who expertly ran the clock down.

Hockey women's gold medal match: Japan mantaining lead

Only three minutes to go!

Indians are getting frustrated as the Japanese are running down the clock with ease. They are taking the ball to the corners.

The former champions are down to 10 women as Monica gets yellow-carded for a push.

Hockey gold medal match: Japan defending in numbers in the final quarter

Fourth quarter (7 min): Japan, as expected, have crowded their defence. They're doing a good job in the midfield as well. India need to stay calm and look to create opportunities.

With less than nine minutes to go, it remains IND 1-2 JPN in the women's hockey gold medal match.

Hockey gold medal match: Japan take the lead again!

Third quarter (14 min): Second penalty corner for Japan and they convert again! A good time to take the lead as there is only a minute left in the third quarter.

Kawamura Motomi scores from a penalty corner. A slight variation and Indian defenders are stunned. Not good defending this!

Hockey gold medal match: India start second half strong!

Third quarter (5 min): A good counter-attack by Navjot Kaur and Vandhana. However, India are denied a goal by the Japanese shot-stopper.

India have looked better in the first five minutes of this third quarter.

Hockey gold medal match: Third quarter underway

In 30 minutes, we will get to know the new Asian women's hockey champions. The Indian defence needs to stay alert and try to keep the ball more like they did in the second part of the second quarter.

Hokckey gold medal match: IND 1-1 JPN at half-time!

Japan dominated the second quarter with a lot of possession but Navneet's brilliance helped India claw back into the match. It will give them the much-needed breather against this Japanese team, who are relentlessly putting pressure on the former champions.

Hockey gold medal match: India equalise in the second quarter

Neha Goyal scores! Indian fans celebrate. There is a big sense of relief on coach Marijne's face.

Navneet Kaur set up the goal. She bustled forward and sent a cross towards the far post. All that Goyal had to do was put her stick in the way of the incoming ball.

India cannot afford to relax as Japan aren't going to get bogged down.

Hockey gold medal match: Japan dominating possession in second quarter

The Japanese midfield and defence have been in top form since the start of the second quarter. Hardly any possession for Rani & co.

Hockey gold medal match: India 0-1 JPN at the end of 1st quarter

Shimizu Minami's goal separates the two teams at the end of the first quarter. Both teams had created quite a few chances but Japan found the back of the net.

India need to avoid losing possession as often as they did in the first quarter for the remainder of the match.

Hockey gold medal match: Japan take the lead!

First quarter (11 min): Japan go 1-0 up!

Oikawa Shihori scores from a penalty corner. It is safe to say that the goal came against the run of play.

India had gotten their first penalty corner 10 minutes into the first quarter. Navneet did the push out and Gurjit Kaur took it.

However, India were denied the lead as it was a brilliant save from the Japanese shot-stopper even the ball headed towards the top corner.

Hockey gold medal match: IND 0-0 JPN

First quarter (8 min): Savita makes a good save to keep it 0-0.

The Indian defenders were expecting a foul and seemingly stopped play even as the Japanese forwards were trying to find spaces inside the 'D'.

Hockey gold medal match: India create early chance!

First quarter (5 min): Strong start for India, they create a chance as early as in the fifth minute!

Great interception by Rani and she played a good ball to Navneet, who turned around and struck it straight into the Japanese keeper.

Rani misses what seemed to be a straight-forward chance off the rebound.

Hockey gold medal match: India take on Japan!

We're 20 minutes away from the big gold medal match! India, under Sjoerd Marijne, have been phenomenal at the Asian Games. However, a big test and a high-pressure match await them.

Rani Rampal's girls have become the first Indian women's team to reach the Asiad hockey final in 20 years. Can they go on to end a 36-year-old gold medal-drought?

India had comfortably crushed the likes of Indonesia (8-0), Kazakhstan (21-0), Korea (4-1), Thailand (5-0) in the group stages.

However, they were made to work hard in the semi-final by China, whom Rani's girls outclassed by a solitary goal.

Nonetheless, what was impressive was the team's composure.

To put things into perspective, the men's team lost a closely-fought semi-final to Malaysia after conceding an equaliser in the penultimate minute of the fourth quarter.

Boxing: Amit Panghal reaches men's light flyweight final!

Top class boxing bout! Amit Panghal manages to beat Paalam Carlo of Philippines via split decision (3-2) in the men's light flyweight semi-final!

Panghal, the 2018 Commonwealth Games silver medalist, was dominated in the first round by the 20-year-old Filipino boxer. The Indian pugilist though came back well in the second round.

The final round was interrupted quite a few times but both boxers came up with top-class punches.

Panghal and the Indian boxing contingent will be delighted with the result, especially after Vikas Krishan pulled out of the middleweight semi-final with an injury earlier in the day.

Panghal will be battling with Uzbekistan's Dusmatov for the gold medal tomorrow.
