AR Rahman
AR Rahman opened up about how his work is constantly compared to his past work and how winning big awards has made him question himself. Instagram

AR Rahman is inevitably one of the most revered music composers in contemporary times, not just in India but across the world. Over the years, he has smitten music lovers with his compositions and also with the power of his voice. For many, his music is symbolic and, to an extent, even nostalgic as well. Recently, he opened up about how people's nostalgia has had an impact on his work, how his previous works have been compared to the kind of work he has been doing in recent times, and more.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Rahman confessed that owing to people's nostalgia for his work, there have been times when he has questioned his own creativity. He was also very honest in expressing that winning Oscars may feel like a burden, but he has always strived to prove himself over and over again.

Rahman said, "For the past six years, to be frank, when people come to you, the '90s generation have a certain nostalgia, certain affinity towards your music. The same goes for those born in the 2000s and the next decade. They come and gaslight you. They say, "In the '90s, you did Roja (1992). That's very good music, sir!' That feels like now, you're not doing good music, right? It actually harms your thinking if you're not in your best mood."

The music maestro did not choose to be comfortable and instead chose to pick up more and more projects.

Rahman revealed, "So I thought, what if I go on a rampage and keep doing movies, songs after songs?" He further went on to add, "Every director who comes to me now says, 'You've done such a great sequence in Mani sir's Thug Life. All the examples now are from the last six years. I've done 20–30 movies in the last six years. So I'm safe now. I've got enough for the next generation. That was intentional."
