Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have called it quits after 12 years. Jolie's lawyer, in a statement, cited "irreconcilable differences" as the reason and said that the Oscar-winning actress has filed for divorce from her husband Pitt.

According to the court documents, Jolie and Pitt, who are famously called as Brangelina, were separated on September 15.

"This decision was made for the health of the family. She will not be commenting, and asks that the family be given its privacy at this time," Jolie's lawyer Robert Offer said in a statement.

"I am very saddened by this but what matters most now is the well-being of our kids," Pitt told People magazine in a statement. "I kindly ask the press to give them the space they deserve during this challenging time."

Brangelina were one of the most high-profile couples in the entertainment world. Jolie and Pitt started dating in 2005 and got married in August 2014. Their relationship remained steady for over a decade, but soon after marriage reports of trouble in paradise started doing the rounds. And two years after their marriage they have called it quits.

Social media users reacted on Twitter with shock and expressed sadness over the breakup news. #Brangelina hashtag was used around 720 times per minute on Twitter after the news of Pitt and Jolie ending their marriage broke, according to Reuters.
