Severe weather has battered Washington DC, with thunder, hail and winds of up to 60mph hitting the US capital. Amateur footage of the weather has shown one of the most famous landmarks in the country, the Washington Monument, illuminated by the lightning strikes.

Weather warnings remained in effect across the state until 10pm on 2 May, with flash flood warnings staying in place overnight for many places as well.

John Hanacek uploaded this amazing video to Instagram, showing the thunder and lightning striking right next to the historic monument.

Some hailstones as large as 3 inches have reportedly fallen across the DC area, and a tornado warning was in place in southern Maryland.
