South Korean consumer electronics major Samsung launched the new made-in-India tablet, Galaxy Tab Iris, on May 25.

As the name suggests, the new Samsung tablet boasts biometric technology-based dual-Eye Iris scanner on the top-left corner of the device's back.

In India, the Galaxy Tab Iris can be used for Aadhaar-based paperless and cashless eGovernance services, such as taxation, passport, education and healthcare, Samsung said.

Besides the government services, it can also be used by banks and business enterprises, which use the 12-digit Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) number for financial transactions, the company added.

How does the Iris scanner work?

The Iris scanner is said to be a more advanced and near-foolproof system as it involves camera technology with subtle infrared illuminations to capture the detailed nerve pattern on the iris (eye).

Using this information, digital impressions are created by mathematical and statistical algorithm so that accurate profile is created. This biometric technology is nearly impossible to be cracked by an imposter, unlike finger-print scanner that can be bypassed with a fake thumb print.

Other stipulated features include 7.0-inch WSVGA TFT screen, Android 5.1 Lollipop OS, 1.2GHz quad-core processor, 1.5GB RAM, 8GB inbuilt storage, 5MP primary camera on the back and a 3,600mAh battery.
