Specifications of the rumoured CyanogenMod OS-powered Micromax smartphone, dubbed Canvas 5, has surfaced online, inciting excitement among tech savvy Android enthusiasts.

Technology blog Droid Goblin, citing credible sources, has claimed that Micromax Canvas 5 - understood to be the successor Canvas 4 (released in July 2014) - will sport a 5.0-inch full HD display, with metal (Aluminum) back cover similar to its predecessor and come shipped with a 18.0-megapixel main camera and a 5.0-megapixel snapper on the front.

The USP of Canvas 5 is that it will run on the CyanogenMod Android 4.4.4 KitKat custom ROM and will be backed by 2GB RAM and 16GB inbuilt memory (expandable via MicroSD card).

As of now, there is no word on the exact release date of Canvas 5 but it is expected to be priced under ₹22,000 and hit the stores this year end.

The revelation comes close on the heels of reports of CyanogenMod inking a deal with Micromax to come up with custom Android smartphones and now, with the leaked document, the project is on its way to fruition soon.

If Canvas 5 rumours turn out to be true, Micromax will be the third smartphone maker after Oppo Electronics Corporation and OnePlus to join the exclusive club to offer CyanogenMod OS-based devices in the industry.

For the uninitiated, the CyanogenMod custom ROM is based on the AOSP (Android Open Source Project) OS. It is said to bring in more customisation options to boost device performance, visually appealing interface, shortcut for easy access to key apps and loads of personalisation options, compared to stock Android.

It has been reported (courtesy The Information) that CyanogenMod recently rejected an offer made by Google to merge with the Android team. Instead, the company is looking for new OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers) partners and venture capital firms to raise funds to make the company profitable.

As per numerous reports, there are around 12 million people across the globe, subscribing this custom OS and it has the potential to generate huge revenue.

[Note: Previously, CyanogenMod had spurned acquisition offers from other tech-titans like Microsoft, Amazon.com and Yahoo as well].
