Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that former Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes will not be joining Anfield in the near future.

Valdes, who is currently a free agent after being released by Barcelona this summer, was being linked with a move to Anfield, with Rodgers keen to sign a new goalkeeper to compete with his current first choice Simon Mignolet.

Although the 32-year-old was initially expected join to AS Monaco, the move fell through after Valdes picked up an anterior cruciate ligament injury while playing for Barcelona in March.

The Merseyside club, who made a number of signings following the departure of Luis Suarez this summer, were believed to be keen on snapping up the Spaniard on a free transfer in the next couple of months.

But now Rodgers, who was believed to be waiting for Valdes to regain his fitness, has ruled out the possibility of the Spaniard joining Anfield.

On being asked, in an interview with Spanish newspaper AS, whether he would be bringing in any new Spanish players in the next couple of months, the Northern Irishman simply replied: "No."

It is believed that Valdes' move to Liverpool fell through after the 32-year-old refused to join the Merseyside club on trial, according to the Daily Mirror.

Meanwhile, Rodgers admits that Liverpool will have a tough time against European title holders Real Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday.

"They [Real Madrid] are as strong a team now as they have been for many years," the former Swansea City boss told the Telegraph.

"They have everything; big experience, big players, speed, technique, they have a fantastic team and a great manager in Ancelotti, a good man who works with players and who is a good person.

"They have amazing talents all over the field. The have the technique to play in small spaces and when the space opens up there is no one better on the counter-attack because in Ronaldo and Bale they have two players that could be in the Olympic 100 metres final."

The Reds are currently third in Group C, having recorded a win and a defeat in their opening fixtures against Ludogorets Razgrad and FC Basel respectively.
