The two sides will be up against each other in a Davis Cup tie after 51 years. Spain got past India 4-1 in the Davis Cup World Group quarterfinal tie in 1922 in Great Britain, while in 1927, India defeated Spain by a 3-2 margin in a Europe 1st round tie in Spain.

Again in 1965, Spain hosted India in inter-zonal finals and won the tie 3-2.

Spain entered the World Group playoffs following a 4-1 win against Romania in the Davis Cup 2016 Europe/Africa Zone, while India entered the playoffs following a 4-1 victory against Korea in the Davis Cup 2016 Asia/Oceania Zone.
