Father's Day, celebrated on the third Sunday of June in most parts of the world, falls on June 19 this year. Unlike Mother's Day, there are different accounts that describe the history and origin of the day dedicated for fatherhood.
According to Dictionary.com, observing a special day for fathers began with Sondra Smart Dodd, who got inspired by Mother's Day sermon in 1909. Soon, Dodd decided to celebrate a day to honour the contributions of fathers to the society and it is believed that the first Father's Day was celebrated in June 1910 in Washington State coinciding with her father's birth month.
Although U.S. President Lyndon B Johnson had proclaimed Father's Day a national holiday in 1966; it was officially signed as a federal holiday by then president Richard Nixon in 1972. Meanwhile, Grace Golden Clayton's name is also connected with the origin of Father's Day. She is said to have organised an event to honour the fathers killed in Monongah mining disaster in 1907 about six months after mishap.
