A knife-wielding assailant injured at least two people in Shanghai on Friday before being apprehended by the police.

A man attacked a group at People's Square in Shanghai, China's CCTV news channel reported.

The motive of the attacker is not clear. Photos showed blood stains on the ground where the attacker was overpowered by police officials.

While knife attacks have often been reported in China's restive Xinjiang region, the attack in Shanghai, a financial hub, is a rare incident.

Last year, a knife attack at a railway station in China's Yunnan province had left 31 people dead.
