A man armed with a knife and a meat cleaver created havoc at a cafe in Melbourne, Australia on Tuesday, in a chilling reminder of the Lindt cafe siege in Sydney last December,.

The man, who called himself "messiah of Islam", smashed windows at the La Trobe St cafe in Melbourne, scaring customers before moving to a restaurant on the first floor of the building.

The Victoria Police Special Operations Group surrounded the restaurant and negotiated with the armed man for about an hour till he surrendered, according to 7 News Melbourne

Images showed the man with bloodied hands standing at the window of the cafe and making gestures at the police.

The Victoria police reportedly said he was not making any threats to the public but was in an altercation with another person

In a video clip of the incident, the man is heard calling out for his mother and asking the police to shoot him.

Australia had been shocked by a terror siege at the Lindt cafe in Sydney last December by a man who took hostages for over 16 hours and killed at least one before he was shot dead by the police. Another hostage died after being hit by a police bullet during the clash.
