In this weeks Music Minute, a rundown of the American Music Awards 2016 including Selena Gomezs emotional comeback, Drake and Justin Biebers triumph and Green Days anti-Donald Trump campaign.
Model Gigi Hadid and comedian Jay Pharoah hosted the awards ceremony on 20 November at the Staples Center in Los Angeles where Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj, Green Day, Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga were among performers.
Drake and Justin Bieber glory
It was a triumphant night for Canada as Drake and Justin Bieber walked away with four awards each. The One Dance rapper was honoured with rap/hip hop album for Views while Bieber won the coveted video of the year for Sorry.
Unfortunately for Bieber, he lost out on scooping artist of the year with Ariana Grande swooping in to claim a surprise win. Fighting back tears, Grande said in her acceptance speech: Thank you guys so much, I am shaking, I want to say thank you to my fans, I love you to the bottom of my heart... I am shaking.
Selena Gomez return
The Kill Em With Kindness singer Selena Gomez made an emotional return to the spotlight after taking some time out this summer. While accepting her award for favourite pop/rock female artist, Gomez explained that she took a hiatus as she felt absolutely broken inside.
She said: In 2014, this stage was actually the first time that I was authentically 100 percent honest with all of you. I think its safe to say most of you know my life whether I liked it or not. And I had to stop. Because I had everything. And I was absolutely broken inside. I kept it all together enough to where I would never let you down, but I kept it too much together to where I let myself down.
Delivering one last heartfelt message, the singer dedicated her award to everyone stating: I care about people. This is for you.
Green Days message for Trump
As for the other highlights, US rock band Green Day sent president-elect Donald Trump a stern message during their performance, chanting: No Trump, No KKK, No Fascist USA!, while late singer Prince was honoured posthumously with top soundtrack for his 1984 album Purple Rain. Lastly, former Police frontman Sting performed a medley of his biggest hits to celebrate winning the AMAs prestigious award of merit.
