London is one of the most diverse cities in the world so its no surprise that some Conservative songsmiths have produced a multilingual campaign song to help Zac Goldsmith get elected to City Hall. The tune – Zac Goldsmith: Jeete Ga! (He will win) – was created by Conservative Connect, a self-described innovative grassroots organisation which urges people from separate ethnic and culture backgrounds to get behind the Tory candidate.
The unofficial song features no less than six different languages – English, Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi, Chinese and Bangla – and contains subtitles. The video has received almost 2,000 hits on YouTube. Nothing to do with us, but we welcome the support, a spokesperson for Goldsmith told IBTimes UK.
But one commentator branded the song awful. Hands down the worst thing Im likely to see on YouTube all year. Almost beautiful in its sheer awfulness. Top marks, the YouTube user declared. Another said: This is a parody song by his opponents, surely? The Tories dont honestly think this is a good idea do they?
The video comes just weeks before the 5 May election, where Labours Sadiq Khan is expected to beat Goldsmith and succeed Boris Johnson as the next Mayor of London. The latest opinion poll from ComRes, of more than 1,000 people between 30 March and 3 April, put Khan ten points ahead of Goldsmith in the second round of voting (55% versus 45%).
