Xi Jinping says Iran war does not serve 'common interests' at BRICS Summit in Delhi

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Saturday said the ongoing conflict in the Middle East does not serve the "common interests" of the international community, as he addressed the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi.

Xi arrived in Delhi earlier on Saturday to attend the two-day summit hosted by India. The BRICS meeting is taking place against the backdrop of the Iran-US conflict and the Russia-Ukraine war, with global trade, security and geopolitical tensions among the key issues before the grouping.

According to Chinese state media, Xi called on BRICS countries to strengthen cooperation and oppose violations of the sovereignty of other nations. He also urged greater cooperation among member countries in emerging areas such as artificial intelligence.

Xi speaks on Middle East conflict

Xi's remarks on the Middle East war come at a time when the conflict has emerged as a major concern for the global economy and international security.

The ongoing hostilities have raised concerns over energy supplies, trade routes and global economic stability. India has also highlighted the importance of secure sea lanes and the safety of seafarers amid the wider regional tensions.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who is also attending the BRICS Summit, has criticised US sanctions and accused the US and Israel of aggression against Iran. He has called for greater use of national currencies in BRICS trade to reduce the bloc's vulnerability to political and economic shocks.

BRICS Summit takes place amid global conflicts

The 18th BRICS Summit is being held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on September 12 and 13, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosting leaders from member and partner countries.

The summit is focused on strengthening cooperation in trade, investment, technology and other areas, while leaders are also expected to exchange views on major international and regional developments.

The conflict in Ukraine and the situation in West Asia have added a significant geopolitical dimension to this year's summit. The grouping is also seeking to expand its role in global affairs and give greater representation to emerging and developing economies.

Xi calls for stronger BRICS cooperation

Xi also called for BRICS nations to deepen cooperation in areas including artificial intelligence. He urged members to oppose interference in the internal affairs of other countries and violations of national sovereignty.

His remarks come during his first visit to India in nearly seven years and ahead of a scheduled bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Modi-Xi meeting is expected to focus on the broader India-China relationship, including efforts to maintain communication and manage differences between the two countries.

The Chinese President's participation in the summit provides an opportunity for BRICS members to discuss common challenges at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions and uncertainty over the global economic outlook.
