In recent days, pollution from vehicles has been discussed like never before in India. Diesel vehicles are considered as the main reason behind vehicular pollution and authorities have taken steps to curb them that include registration ban of vehicles in different parts of the country. As the World Environment Day is celebrated on June 5, we have compiled a list of electric and hybrid cars sold in India that emit no or less gases. If you are planning to buy a car that exhales less carbon dioxide, consider the following.

Mahindra E2o

The e2o, a two-door car that can carry four people, is manufactured at the Mahindra Reva, Karnataka plant. Priced at Rs. 6.75 lakh ex-showroom, Bengaluru, the E2o is powered by an electric motor that is driven by 48-volt lithium-ion batteries, which can generate 25.4bhp of power at 3,750rpm and 53.9Nm of torque at 0-3,000rpm. Reva e2o has a top speed of 81kmph and a range of 120km from a full charge. It takes five hours to fully charge the battery of the E2o.

Mahindra e-Verito

The first electric sedan of the country was launched by Mahindra & Mahindra on June 2, 2016. The The e-Verito is priced at Rs. 9.5 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi for the base D2 variant. The electric sedan is also available in D4 and D6 variants, priced at Rs. 9.75 lakh and Rs. 10 lakh respectively. The sedan is powered by a 3-phase 72V electric motor that produces 40bhp and 91Nm of toque. The company claims a top speed of 86kmph for the car, and a range of 110km on a full charge. With Mahindra's fast charge, the car can be fully charged in less than two hours.

Toyota Camry Hybrid

The Camry Hybrid is powered by an in-line four-cylinder 2.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor. The hybrid setup develops 202bhp; 158bhp from the petrol motor and 44bhp from the electric motor. It runs on Hybrid Synergy Drive, which can sense and change the source of power from petrol engine to electric motor. It claims to offer a mileage of 19.16 kmpl and is manufactured at the company's Bidadi plant. The Camry Hybrid is priced at Rs. 30.90 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi.

Toyota Prius

One of the first electric car models launched in India, the Prius costs Rs 38.10 lakh ex-showroom, Delhi for base Z5 variant. The top-spec Z6 variant costs Rs. 39.80 lakh. The Prius is powered by an in-line four-cylinder 1.8-litre petrol engine in conjunction with the electric motor. Both the units combined it develops 134bhp and the car has three driving modes- EV (Electric Vehicle), Eco, and Power. The Prius boast of 23.91 kmpl fuel efficiency.

BMW i8

BMW i8 is powered by 3-cylinder, 1.5-litre, twin-turbo petrol engine, in combination with an electric motor. The petrol engine generates a power of 227bhp and a peak torque of 320Nm and is mated to a 6-speed automatic gearbox transmission. The electric motor of the i8 is tuned to generate 129bhp of power and 250Nm of torque, taking the total output to 356bhp and 570Nm. The car is capable of attaining 0 to 100kmph speed in 4.4 seconds with a top speed of 250kmph; along with a fuel efficiency of 47.45kmpl. The BMW i8 is priced at Rs 2.14 crore, ex-showroom, Delhi.

Maruti Suzuki Ciaz SHVS

The Ciaz hybrid comes powered by a 1.3-litre Multijet diesel engine with Integrated Starter Generator. It makes use of lithium ion battery that gets charged with the help of regenerative braking. The system converts the kinetic energy of the rolling wheels into electricity for charging the battery. The technology also helps to boost fuel efficiency of the Ciaz Hybrid and returns ARAI-rated mileage of 28.09 kmpl. The Ciaz SHVS prices starts at Rs 8.23 lakh for the base variant and goes up to Rs. 10.18 lakh for top-spec variant, ex-showroom Delhi.

Maruti Suzuki Ertiga SHVS

The Ertiga's diesel models use the same tech on the Ciaz SHVS. The Ertiga diesel is powered by a 1.3 multi-jet unit that develops 89bhp of power and 200Nm of torque. With the SHVS small hybrid system in place, it returns an ARAI claimed fuel efficiency of 24.52kmpl. The MPV features idle start/stop, torque assist function, brake energy regeneration and gear shift indicator. The Ertiga SHVS range start at Rs. 7.59 lakh to Rs. 9.28 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi.
