World Book Day and Copyright Day is observed on April 23 every year. Through this, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) promotes the habit of reading and publishing in over 100 countries throughout the world.

The first international book day was celebrated in the year 1995. The date coincided with the death anniversary of the greatest English writer William Shakespeare. As part of the Book Day celebrations, millions of people organise and attend several meetings, conferences, workshops and debates to create awareness on the importance of gaining knowledge by reading books.
