Riyazuddin Mansuri, a mattress trader from Delhi's Hauz Rani area in Malviya Nagar, has become a symbol of courage and humanity after helping save several people during the devastating fire at the Flourish Stay hotel on June 3. However, after sacrificing stock worth more than ₹2 lakh in the rescue effort, he is now seeking compensation for his losses.
When the fire broke out at the hotel, panic-stricken guests trapped on the upper floors smashed windows and desperately called for help. Without hesitation, Mansuri and his son, Arman, rushed mattresses, quilts and bedding materials from their nearby shop to the street below.
The father-son duo spread around 20 to 25 mattresses and quilts on the road, creating a makeshift safety cushion for guests forced to jump from the burning building. Their quick thinking is credited with helping save at least eight people, while some reports suggest as many as 12 lives may have been spared.
"Business can be rebuilt, but lives can't," Mansuri said while reflecting on the decision to sacrifice his entire stock during the emergency.

The tragic blaze claimed 21 lives, including nine Indian nationals and 12 foreign nationals, making it one of the deadliest fire incidents in the capital in recent years. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the cause of the fire.
While Mansuri's actions earned widespread praise across social media platforms, including Instagram, he has urged authorities to ensure that citizens who step forward during emergencies are not left to bear the financial burden alone. He has requested compensation of ₹2 lakh to cover the losses incurred during the rescue operation.
The incident also highlighted the collective efforts of local residents. Community members, including Amir Khan, Mohd Shoaib, Wasim Raja and Mohd Afzal, joined the rescue efforts before emergency services arrived. Neighbours brought pillows to help soften the impact for those jumping from the building, while bedsheets from Mansuri's shop were used as makeshift stretchers to carry the injured.
Recognising his bravery and selflessness, local authorities and community members later honoured Mansuri with a financial reward of ₹1 lakh. However, many residents believe additional compensation should be provided, considering the significant losses he suffered while helping save lives.

The heroic actions of Mansuri, his son and local residents have sparked a broader conversation about emergency preparedness, civic responsibility and the need to support ordinary citizens who risk their livelihoods to help others during times of crisis.
For many, Riyazuddin Mansuri's story serves as a powerful reminder that acts of humanity often emerge in the darkest moments.
