Premier League runnersup Liverpool take on Bundesliga runnersup Borussia Dortmund in a pre-season clash that promises to be full of excitement, energy and entertainment.

Overview

Liverpool's form in the preseasons, so far, can be best described as unpredictable.

While the Reds started off on the wrong foot by registering losses against Brøndby (2-1) and Roma (1-0), they made a good comeback in the International Champions Cup, beating Olympiakos (1-0), Manchester City (3-1 on penalties following a 2-2 draw) and AC Milan (2-0) to reach the final.

However, the much hyped final did not prove to be a close one, with Manchester United recording a comfortable 3-1 victory over the Reds.

Brendan Rodgers' side was not bad in the game but their failure to convert chances cost them as Wayne Rooney and co stunned the Reds by clinching three goals in the second half. And eventually Steven Gerrard's opening goal, via a penalty, only proved to be a consolation.

Despite signing a host of new players this summer, the Merseyside club seem to be missing Luis Suarez, who nearly delivered them the Holy Grail last season.

And it looks like Rodgers still has a lot to ponder over as Liverpool look to compete with the very best in the Champions League next season.

Dortmund, on the other hand, seem to be least affected by the departure of their talisman Robert Lewandowski, who joined archrivals Bayern Munich on a free transfer in the summer.

With six victories in seven pre-season fixtures, Dortmund seem to be sending out a message to Bayern - who incidentally succumbed to a 1-2 defeat against the MLS All Stars - that they mean business this season.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who is looking to fill Lewandowski's shoes, has been particularly lethal for the German side, scoring a brace each against Rot-Weiss Essen and Rapperswil-Jona.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan has also managed to shine in preseason, finding the net in almost all the games.

New signing Ciro Immobile also seems to have adjusted well into his new side, finding the net in the last couple of fixtures.

However, Jurgen Klopp's side will face their first real test when they travel to Liverpool on Sunday.

So far, Dortmund have not had a real challenge in preseason, with them only facing some low key sides including Hessen Kassel, Heidenheim, VfL Osnabruck, Rot-Weiss Essen, Chievo, Rapperswil-Jona and Slask Wrocław .

Now the Germans face their moment of truth as they take on Liverpool ahead of the new season.
