The second grand slam of the year, the French Open, started with a lot of anticipation on Sunday. The tournament has been scheduled from May 24 to June 7, 2015.
Defending champion (women) Maria Sharapova is all set to start her Roland Garros campaign on Monday. She will face unseeded Kaia kanepi from Estonia. Sharapova would look to start her campaign with a thumping win. She has been seeded 2nd after Serena Williams of the US.
Andy Murray will also play his first game of the French Open against the unseeded Facundo Arguello from Argentina. Murray has never won a French Open title before and Rafael Nadal's slump in form will give him a chance to achieve the title; but for that, he has to start his campaign on a good note. He will then face the top seeds in the upcoming rounds if he beats his opponent comprehensively on Monday.
4th seeded Tomas Berdych will take on another unseeded player named Yoshihito Nishioka from Japan. Being in good form, Berdych has been seeded above Nadal, Ferrer, Nishikori and Wawrinka, and would look to give tough competition to other seeded opponents.
On Sunday, 2nd seeded Roger Federer cruised to the second round after beating Colombia's Alejandro Falla in three straight sets (6-3 6-3 6-4 ). Stan Wawrinka defeated Marsel Ilhan (6-3 6-2 6-3) and Kei Nishikori (6-3 7-5 6-1) beat Paul-Henri Mathieu, while 3rd seeded Simona Halep defeated unseeded Russian Evgeniya Rodina (7-5 6-4).
