Last season the Gunners cruised past Fenerbahce in the same stage, and Arsene Wenger will look for a repeat performance when they take on Besiktas in the first leg.

Arsenal were not at their absolute best in their English Premier League opener against Crystal Palace, but dug deep to pick up a 2-1 win courtesy Aaron Ramsey.

Ramsey played a pivotal role in helping Arsenal enter the group stages of the Champions League last season, and the midfielder will, no doubt, look to do the same one more time.

"He is Arsenal's best player," Besiktas manager Slaven Bilic, a former West Ham player, said of Ramsey. "Their most important player.

"Most top players have one quality that stands out. You can't tell with Ramsey. Ramsey's not that quick, he's not Paul Scholes in his brain, he's not Dennis Bergkamp, he's not Mesut Ozil, he's not Roy Keane but he's got everything nine out of 10."

While Ramsey is expected to do damage further up the field, Arsene Wenger has plenty of worries over his defence, with Laurent Koscielny carrying a leg injury. Wenger had admitted he might need to take Per Mertesacker to Istanbul, with Nacho Monreal, who has filled in at centre-back during preseason, set to play at left-back due to Kieran Gibbs' injury, which keeps the England international out of action for at least three weeks.

"We left Kieran Gibbs at home. He had to come off during the game with a hamstring problem. He will be out for two or three weeks."

News that Arsenal are close to signing Kostas Manolas, will, no doubt, be met with delight, but for now Wenger will have to make do with who is available at the back.

The manager, of course, will hope much of the focus on the night will be on the forward end of the pitch, with Arsenal looking to kill the game off in the first leg, much like they did last season.

"We are desperate to do it because we want to play in the Champions League and we know how big these games are," Wenger said. "We had to give a lot [against Crystal Palace], hopefully we will recover and be ready for Tuesday night.

"We are desperate to go through, no matter what it costs we want to go through. We have always a difficult draw, we had Fenerbahce last year, this time we have Besiktas. It's difficult."

Besiktas will look to surprise their opponents, with a few familiar faces in Demba Ba, who moved from Chelsea this summer, and former Arsenal youngster Oguzhan Ozyakup in their lineup.

"I'm happy that he came here. He was educated by us and we saw that he had top quality and technically he is very good," Wenger said of his former player Ozyakup, who just could not make the first team grade." Physically he can run all day, he has very good stamina and a good final pass.

"I always thought he could make a career but at our club he had big competition in front of him and that is why we let him go. It is good to see he has made it to the top level and is now an important player in Turkey."

Team news: Besiktas: Gokhan Tore and Atiba Hutchinson are doubts for the home side.

Arsenal: Along with Gibbs, Yaya Sanogo has also stayed back in London, with the striker picking up a hamstring injury. Mathieu Flamini, though, could feature after recovering from illness.

Expected lineups: Besiktas: Tolga; Kurtulus, Franco, Gulum, Motta; Koyunlu, Hutchinson, Kavlak, Sahan; Pektemek, Ba.

Arsenal: Szczesny; Debuchy, Chambers, Koscielny, Monreal; Arteta; Sanchez, Ramsey, Wilshere, Cazorla; Giroud.

Prediction: 2-1 to Arsenal
