Manchester United continued their winning ways in the Premier League following a comfortable 3-0 win over arch rivals Liverpool courtesy of some spectacular goalkeeping from David De Gea.

Wayne Rooney opened the score for United before Juan Mata doubled their advantage just before the break. Finally Robin van Persie added the icing to the cake by adding another towards the end of the game.

The game started with Raheem Sterling, after being picked out by Adam Lallana with an excellent through ball, forcing a good save from De Gea in the 12th minute.

United have an immediate repose to Liverpool's attack as they broke the deadlock in the 12th minute through Rooney, who fired home from 16 yards after receiving a good ball from Antonio Valencia.

Although Liverpool did continue to bombard United's defences with regular attacks, they were unable to get past De Gea as the Spaniard made two excellent saves to deny the likes of Steven Gerrard and Sterling in the halfway mark of the first half.

However, despite the Reds' continued attacks, it was United who again went ahead in the 40th minute through Mata. Ashley Young whipped a cross into the box and van Persie nodded the ball towards Mata, who made no mistakes as he headed home from close range.

Liverpool got a very good chance to pull one back right after the break but Jordan Henderson wasted the opportunity as he headed Sterling's cross over the crossbar.

Moments later, Sterling got an even better chance to pull a goal back following a poor back pass from Jonny Evans, but De Gea again came to United's rescue as he blocked the England winger's effort.

At the other end, van Persie got a good opportunity to put the game beyond any doubt at the hour mark, but the Dutchman, following an excellent low delivery from Valencia, dragged hosts' effort wide of the target.

Balotelli then tested De Gea with an excellent effort, and the Spaniard made a stunning reaction save to direct Balotelli's effort onto the crossbar.

Finally van Perise managed to make amends for his earlier miss as he put the game to bed in the 71st minute. Mata, after collecting Dejan Lovren's poor clearance, sent a good pass towards van Persie, who easily slotted past Brad Jones.

More chances followed for Liverpool in the closing stages of the game, but the in-form De Gea held on to his clean sheet as he kept out two excellent close range efforts from Balotelli.
