
Veteran Tamil filmmaker, actor and screenwriter K Bhagyaraj passed away after suffering a heart attack in Chennai on Saturday. He was 73.
His death marks the end of an era in Tamil cinema, where he was celebrated for his exceptional storytelling, screenplay writing and his contribution to middle-class family entertainers. Details regarding his funeral and last rites are awaited.
Bhagyaraj is survived by his wife, actor Poornima Bhagyaraj, son and actor Shanthanu Bhagyaraj, and daughter Saranya Bhagyaraj.
The legendary filmmaker had remained active in public life until recently and had attended actor-politician Khushbu Sundar's daughter's wedding in Goa just days before his death.
Born Krishnaswamy Bhagyaraj in Tamil Nadu's Erode district, he began his film career as an assistant to acclaimed filmmaker Bharathiraja before establishing himself as one of Tamil cinema's most influential directors, writers and actors.
Known for his distinctive middle-class family dramas, sharp screenplays and socially rooted storytelling, Bhagyaraj became one of the defining creative voices of Tamil cinema during the 1980s and 1990s.
Over the course of his illustrious career, he directed more than 25 films and acted in over 75 movies. Widely regarded as one of Tamil cinema's finest screenwriters, his work was praised for its relatable characters, emotional depth and engaging narratives.
Some of his most celebrated films include Mundhanai Mudichu, Andha 7 Naatkal and Darling, Darling, Darling, all of which continue to be regarded as classics.
His immense contribution to Tamil cinema earned him rare praise from former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and legendary actor M.G. Ramachandran (MGR), who publicly hailed Bhagyaraj as his heir in the film industry.

Bhagyaraj also left his mark on Hindi cinema by directing Aakhree Raasta (1986), starring Amitabh Bachchan in a dual role alongside Jaya Prada, Sridevi and Anupam Kher. The revenge drama emerged as one of the notable Hindi films of the decade and showcased Bhagyaraj's storytelling prowess beyond Tamil cinema.
