Ajith starrer "Vedalam" (Vedhalam) has performed exceedingly well at the Chennai box office despite the heavy rains. In fact, the movie has overpowered other big releases like "Thoongavanam" and "Prem Ratan Dhan Payo" in the Capital city of Tamil Nadu.

"Vedalam" had 348 shows in the six-day first weekend in Chennai. The movie, which was released on 10 November, has earned Rs 3.23 crore. The audience turnout has been impressive in the first weekend, reports Behindwoods.

In the first three days, the occupancy rates were almost cent percent in most of the theatres. Due to Diwali, the single screens were permitted to have additional shows by the authorities which helped them to cash in on the occasion. However, the movie could have performed a lot better if Chennai was not affected by the unprecedented rains.

Kamal Haasan starrer "Thoongavanam" is in the second place by making Rs 1.69 crore from 255 shows. The film is likely to perform well due to the good word-of-mouth.

Salman Khan's "Prem Ratan Dhan Payo", which has been also released in Tamil as "Meymarandhen Paaraayo", has minted Rs 42.93 lakh from 111 shows. This is said to be a fantastic figure for a Bollywood movie in Tamil Nadu.

Generally, Hindi movies fail to keep up the momentum post-first weekend in Chennai. It is interesting to see how "Prem Ratan Dhan Payo" will perform as the movie also has a Tamil version as well.

"Naanum Rowdy Dhaan" was being played in limited theatres, as most theatres were playing "Vedalam" and "Thoongavanam". By the end of its fourth weekend, it has collected Rs 4.93 crore.
