The previous episode of The Vampire Diaries saw the Sirens striking a deal with The Devil himself, Cade, and enlisting Damon and Stefan as the new henchmen. This saved Alaric's twins from a dark fate, but Alaric wasn't ready to forget Damon's role in kidnapping his children, and the episode ended with Alaric staking Damon.

However, Ian Somerhalder's character is not dead, and this was revealed in the promo for the next episode titled The Next Time I Hurt Somebody, It Could Be You. Although Damon is not dead, speculations are rife that he will be visiting Hell for a brief while, paving the way for a meeting with Elena's doppleganger Katherine.

The fourth episode of the season saw Seline killing Georgie and Georgie's soul gets sucked into the darkness, very similar to what happened to Katherine in season 5. This similarity in their deaths had fans wondering if showrunner Julie Plec was planning to bring back Katherine instead of Elena.
While Plec refused to comment on this, she did say that the similarities aren't accidental. "I will confirm nothing, but the visual similarities are not accidental," she told Entertainment Weekly.

"The big question of the season is: How do our characters fit in this world? Are they all doomed? Is there a chance for redemption? Can you earn your way back out of a one-way ticket to Hell? And even characters that have been heroes, are they already marked? If so, what the hell are they going to do about it?" she added.

The synopsis for the next episode reads:

Faced with the fallout from his interaction with Cade (guest star Wole Parks), Stefan (Paul Wesley) is determined to have one thing go right – Christmas Eve with Caroline. However, when Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Sybil (guest star Nathalie Kelley) crash their Christmas Eve dinner, which had been joined by Alaric (Matt Davis), Matt (Zach Roerig) and Peter (guest star Joel Gretsch), things quickly take a dark and twisted turn. Meanwhile, in a series of flashbacks to Stefan's past, Cade's attempt to entice him with his mysterious agenda leaves Stefan faced with an unimaginable decision.

The Vampire Diaries airs Fridays on the CW.
