With Nina Dobrev's Elena Gilbert out of the picture, the new season of "The Vampire Diaries" is going to focus on Stefan and Caroline's romance, and how she ends up making the decision to be with him.

The previous season saw Caroline accepting her feelings for Stefan, but she wasn't ready for a relationship just yet as she was grieving her mother's death, and dealing with the after effects of her decision to turn off her humanity.

Stefan said he will wait for Caroline till she was ready for him, and the first half of season 7 will see Caroline dealing with her feelings for the younger Salvatore brother.

"Caroline wants to be with Stefan, but she's also trying to do the right thing by herself, taking the time to mourn her mother's death so she can enter into this relationship with a clean state and a free mind," actor Paul Wesley, who plays Stefan Salvatore, told TVLine. "The heart wants what it wants when it wants it, so we'll see moments where's she's struggling, wanting to say something but not knowing what to say."

Executive producer Julie Plec revealed in an earlier interview that she has a lot of interesting stuff planned for Caroline and Stefan, and speculations are rife that one storyline could deal with them having a baby.

Candice Accola, the actress who plays Caroline, is pregnant in real life, and viewers are excited to see how the show will deal with the pregnancy.

"I would say Stefan and Caroline are part of one of the bigger surprises of the season, which we'll unfold around Episode 6 or 7. It's a bit of a fun curveball to throw their way," Plec told TVLine.

When asked about a possible baby for his on-screen brother, actor Ian Somerhalder too said that something interesting is in store for Caroline and Stefan.

"The Vampire Diaries" will return to the CW on 8 October.
