The last grand slam of the year -- US Open -- is here upon us and the competition amongst top tennis players is expected to be top notch at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows.

Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal are the big stars in the men's arena, while Serena Williams, Simona Halep, Caroline Wozniacki make up in the women's competition. However, another huge contender Maria Sharapova has pulled out of the US Open.

Novak Djokovic has been in top form this season, winning the Australian Open, Wimbledon and finishing runners up in the French Open. The Serbian and world number one Djokovic will be eager to win the US Open for the second time in his career.

But Djokovic is going to face huge competition in the form of Roger Federer, who has been one of the most successful players in the US Open with five titles in his illustrious career.

The Swiss maestro comes into the US Open with full confidence after having defeated Djokovic in the finals of the Cincinnati Masters last week. These two stalwarts of the modern era can only meet in the title decider.

Apart from Djokovic and Federer, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, Kei Nishikori, Stan Wawrinka are going to be huge players as they have been performing consistently during the season. Wawrinka has even defeated Djokovic in the finals of the French Open.

In the women's arena, Serena Williams has had an incredible grand slam year so far as she has won all the grand slams and will be eager for a clean sweep as she looks to defend her US Open crown as well. The US Open has been a happy hunting slam for the local favourite with six titles to her name, including title wins in the last three edition of the competition.

Stars such as Ana Ivanovic, Halep, Lucie Safarova and Caroline Wozniacki will be eager to stop her dominance in women's tennis, which is a humongous ask considering the form she has shown in the year.

Though the singles event is always watched with keen interest, other disciplines such as women's doubles, men's doubles and the mixed doubles also provide an interesting contest. Sania Mirza/Martina Hingis and Bob Bryan /Mike Bryan are favourites in the women's and the men's doubles competition respectively.
