US President Donald Trump has said he is approaching a major decision on whether to resume large-scale military attacks against Iran, as the ongoing conflict continues to create tensions across the Middle East.
Speaking to Axios, Trump said he was considering whether to launch another major military offensive against Iran or hold back. "I have a big decision coming up. Do I want to go in and annihilate them or do I not? It's a big decision. Anything could happen with me," he said.
Trump's remarks came ahead of a planned meeting with leaders from six Gulf countries on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York next Tuesday. The leaders of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman are expected to discuss the conflict and its next phase.
Trump said he wanted to hear directly from the Gulf countries before deciding his next move. "I want to find out where they are and how they are doing. We have been very protective of them," he said.
The US President has also recently indicated that he hopes the war is nearing an end and said Iran has reached out to Washington about a possible deal. However, tensions remain high over the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route for global energy shipments.
The conflict has also expanded across the region, with Iran-backed Houthi forces in Yemen involved in attacks that have affected Saudi Arabia and key shipping routes. Recent fighting has raised concerns over energy supplies and the broader economic impact of the conflict.
Trump had earlier held back from restarting major military operations after Saudi Arabia and Qatar expressed concerns that Iran could retaliate against their oil and gas infrastructure. The US has since maintained a significant military presence in the region while diplomatic efforts continue.
The Trump administration is also working on plans for the period after the war, with a focus on containing Iran and strengthening regional ties. Trump is expected to discuss the conflict with Gulf leaders during the upcoming UN General Assembly meetings.
For now, Trump has not indicated when he will make a final decision on whether to resume major attacks against Iran, leaving the next phase of the conflict uncertain.
