After being at Numero Uno position in the MPV segment for over 11 years in India, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) launched second generation of the Innova christened as Innova Crysta on May 2. The Japanese carmaker opened booking for the MPV on May 2 and the deliveries will begin on May 13. The Crysta has been launched at a time when the MPV segment has been experiencing a decline in sales due to the surge of demand for compact SUVs. That raises some eyebrows on how successful will Innova Crysta be over its previous generation model. Here is a compilation of the changes between the old and the new Innova versions.

Platform

The outgoing Innova is based on the IMV platform that uses body-on-ladder-frame construction. Innova Crysta is based on an all-new platform called Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA), which is claimed to be lighter but still stiffer than the platform underpinning the outgoing Innova.

Engine and transmission

The outgoing Innova is powered by 2.5-litre diesel unit that produces 101bhp and 200Nm mated to five-speed manual transmission. On the other hand, the Crysta is available in two engine options -- 2.4-litre and 2.8-litre. The former develops 147bhp and 343Nm mated to five speed manual transmission, while the latter develops 175bhp and 360Nm mated to six-speed automatic transmission. Innova Crysta's 2.4-litre engine is 47bhp and 2.8-litre engine is 74bhp more powerful than previous Innova's 2.5-litre engine.

Dimension

Innova Crysta measures 4,735mm in length, 1,830mm in width and 1,795mm height. The outgoing Innova measures 4,585mm in length, 1,765mm in width and 1,760mm in height. That makes it clear that the Crysta is 150mm longer, 65mm wider and 35mm taller than the last-gen model.

Fuel Efficiency

The previous version of Innova returned fuel efficiency of 13.31kmpl. With the advancement on the technological side, Toyota claims the Crysta 2.4-litre, despite having a bigger engine, returns fuel efficiency of 15.1kmpl and 2.8-litre would give 14.29kmpl.

Price

The last gen model was priced in the range of Rs. 12.70 lakh to Rs. 16.30 lakh, ex-showroom, Mumbai. Innova Crysta is pricier than the previous model. It has been priced in the range of Rs. 13.83 lakh to Rs. 20.77 lakh, ex-showroom Mumbai.
