Just when the mid-week blues were kicking in and we were longing for the weekend to arrive sooner, we stumbled upon a senior dog prom in North Carolina that is probably the cutest thing we have seen in a while. And yes, it is a real thing!

The Grey Muzzle Organization in Raleigh has brought together a few shelter dogs aged six and above, who will participate in a prom contest. And like usual high school proms they will be honoured with titles – Prom King, Prom Queen and the Cutest Couple.

"Pretty in pink and pearls, handsome in bow ties and tails, these adorable dogs are ready to dance the night away at The Grey Muzzle Organization's first-ever Senior Dog Prom," UPI quoted the organisation as saying.

The prom may be a lot of fun and games with dogs dressed up in adorable costumes, but it also comes with a good cause – the hope to get adopted. The Grey Muzzle Organization believes that senior dogs are as amazing and lovely as the younger ones and they too deserve to have a warm and happy home where they are loved and cared for.

While some dogs taking part in the prom already have homes and families, others are up for adoption. For instance, 12-year-old Dwight is seeking a home and so is eight-year-old Misty. Also taking part in the prom is Mikey, 13, who has a family now but lost his previous owner who developed dementia and couldn't keep his pet.

Mikey was then adopted by photographers Mike and Pam Heiney. "He seemed sad and disoriented, deaf, overweight, lumpy and with many obvious health issues. Yet he was stoic and funny," Heiney told Today."Without really discussing it, my wife and I both knew Mikey was going home with us that day."

Talking about what the prom is all about, Lisa Lunghofer, Grey Muzzle's executive director, told Today that it was "a chance for older dogs to shine." "It's an opportunity to showcase senior dogs in a way that highlights their unique personalities and the joy they bring to our lives."

Voting for the contest is open until May 31 and the results will be declared early June.
