Ilayathalapathy Vijay's "Theri" has turned out to be a big hit at the Chennai box office. The Tamil movie has grossed over Rs. 24 crore in the capital city of Tamil Nadu.

Journalist Kaushik LM tweets, "#Theri 10 weeks in running. Chennai City share - 6.35CR, Chengalpet share - 4.80CR City + Chengalpet Gross - 24CR. [sic]"

"Theri" was released on April 14 on the occasion of the Tamil New Year. Prior to the release, the film ran into trouble with some distributors and exhibitors of the Chengalpet region over profit-sharing issue. As the deadlock failed to end on time, the Vijay-starrer did not see the light of the day in many screens in this region along with some districts of Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur.

Yet, "Theri" got an earth-shattering response as it earned over Rs. 1 crore on the opening day in Chennai. Upon release, it got fairly positive reviews and won the hearts of the family audience. This factor played a major role in pulling the audience to theatres in big numbers.

Meanwhile, "Theri," which collected Rs. 13.1 crore on the first day in Tamil Nadu, is all set to complete its 75 days in theatres. The movie is still being played in a few screens in the state.

"Theri" is an action-thriller, written and directed by Atlee Kumar. The Kalaipuli S Dhanu-produced film has Samantha and Amy Jackson playing the female lead roles. The good story and the fantastic performance of the Ilayathalapathy are the highlights of the film, which has raked in close to Rs. 150 crore worldwide.

On the other hand, Vijay has taken a break from the shooting of his next movie, directed by Bharathan. The actor, who celebrated his 42 birthday on Wednesday, June 23, has left for the U.S. with his family on a holiday.
