Karthigai Deepam, the ancient festival of lights is celebrated in Tamil Nadu on the full moon day (Pournami) of Karthikai month (Tamil calendar). This year, it falls on 25 November.
People celebrate the festival by praying for the welfare of their family members and lighten earthen oil lamps. They will also be wearing traditional attires and special delicacies will be prepared as part of the festival along with rangoli or kolams drawn outside each houses.
As part of the festival, more than 20 lakh people are expected to arrive Anaimalai Hills on Wednesday as it is believed that Lord Shiva had appeared before Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma as a flame in Tiruvannamalai.
A huge fire lamp, also known as Mahadeepam, will be lit up on the hill after 6 pm that will be visible for several areas around.
