More than 60 children were injured when a private school bus plunged into a ditch in Perambalur city of Tamil Nadu on Thursday.

All the injured students, both boys and girls, were rushed to a nearby hospital. The Tamil Nadu police have arrested the driver from the accident site.

Earlier it was being said that 50 students were injured in the accident.

The accident occurred when the school bus hit the median and fell into a ditch near the collector's office. Students alleged that the driver was rash and had been driving at a high speed, OneIndia Tamil reported.

After hearing about the accident parents of all the students, aboard the school bus, gathered outside the hospital.

The parents and the students have alleged that there were about 127 students on the bus, which is against the norms. However, the headmaster of the school claims that only 63 students were on the bus when the accident occurred, adding that this was the first accident.

District official Munuswamy has called for a meeting in the evening to discuss the accident with the private school.
