Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa allocated Rs 500 crore for relief and rehabilitation in the south Indian state, which is reeling under the destruction caused by heavy rainfall, reports said.

Indian Air Force deployed 4 helicopters towards the rescue operations in the Tamil Nadu. The incessant downpour has claimed about 95 lives in the state over the past one week.

Several NGOs have also joined in the relief work by distributing dry rations, non-food items and dignity kits, reports said.

The India Meteorological Department has said that the depression was slowly moving towards neighbouring Andhra Pradesh.

However, heavy rain is expected to continue in Nagapattinam, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Arakkonam and Chennai.

Whether the depression would intensify into a cyclone is yet to be ascertained.
