Amid reports that Iran has sent in hundreds of its soldiers to fight the Islamic State (Isis) terrorists, news agency Tasnim reported on Tuesday that two more senior officers of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards were killed in Syria fighting the Sunni terror group.

The two martyred Iranian officers have been identified as Major General Farshad Hasounizadeh and Brigadier Hamid Mokhtarband, both top commanders in the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC).

The soldiers were killed fighting the Isis terrorists on 12 October. The Iranian media, however, did not reveal where in Syria the two officers died.

Earlier, another senior IRGC commander -- Brigadier General Hussein Hamedani -- was killed in Syria during a mission advising pro-government forces near Aleppo last week.

It has been reported that while the Russian air force will provide major support to the Syrian forces, the IRGC will be leading the ground attacks against the Isis.

There are more than 1,000 Iranian soldiers in Syria, who have reportedly been coordinating with the Hezbollah to assist the Syrian regime under President Assad to fight the rebels, including the Isis.
