As the functioning of educational institutions in different parts of Jammu and Kashmir was badly affected due to Operation Sindoor and unprecedented floods, the Union Territory government has announced a 15 percent syllabus relaxation for Class 10, 11, and 12 students of the summer zone of Jammu Division in the annual regular examinations.

An official spokesperson of the Jammu and Kashmir government on Thursday said that the decision was taken keeping in view the disruptions caused by long spells of inclement weather and the warlike situation last year.

Educational institutions across Jammu Division, especially in Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Poonch, and Rajouri districts, remained shut for over 15 days in May 2025 during Operation Sindoor. After Pakistan resorted to unprovoked shelling in the civilian areas of these districts, authorities were forced to close schools as a precautionary measure.

After schools remained closed for over 15 days due to Operation Sindoor, authorities were again compelled to shut down educational institutions for nearly one month in August 2025 because of unprecedented floods.

Announcing the decision, Education Minister Sakeena Itoo said the department was fully aware of these disruptions and that feedback from students and parents, as well as other stakeholders, was taken into consideration before finalising the decision. She said necessary measures were taken to address the concerns of students.

The minister said the August floods severely disrupted the normal functioning of schools, which adversely affected the completion of the syllabus.

"Such a step will help maintain educational balance and prevent summer zone students from being placed at any unfair or disadvantageous position," she said.

Sakeena Itoo added that the government remains committed to upgrading infrastructure and improving the academic environment in public institutions, and that recent results of Class 10 and Class 12 examinations in Kashmir and winter-zone areas of Jammu reflect a marked improvement in the academic ecosystem of government schools.

She said the government is focused on providing an enabling environment to help students pursue their academic dreams, adding that every effort is being made to transform government schools into centres of academic excellence.

The long-term plan, she said, is to transform Jammu and Kashmir into a knowledge economy and develop students into productive human resources fully equipped with modern knowledge and vocational skills.

This, she added, would require continuous enhancement of teachers' skills and augmentation of the required infrastructure.

The minister wished students the best of luck and advised them to work hard for the annual examinations beginning on February 17 for Class 10th, February 23rd for Class 12th, and February 28th for Class 11th.
