Google has started a timely venture into what could be called its advocacy towards Gay rights in Russia, just as the north-eastern city of Sochi prepares for a grand opening of the winter Olympic Games.

The Google Doodle, that usually changes its logo to highlight important events, is currently presented in the colours of the rainbow flag and also features images of Winter Games events.

The doogle that is linked to search results for "Olympic charter" comes accompanied with a quote from it: "The practice of sport is a human right. Every individual must have the possibility of practicing sport, without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play."

In the build-up to the games, International outcry has been pouring in, further intensifying the debate of the anti-gay laws in Russia and the central principles of the Games that propagates equality. Only a day before the formal opening of the event, members of the Russian punk band Pussy Riot, who were released from prison in December, urged for a 'boycott' of the event and demanded a 'free Russia'.

There have been widespread protests in Russia, helmed by international support, over the anti-gay law in Russia.
