The Centre has introduced new packaging rules that will require products such as soaps, shampoos and toothpaste to clearly indicate whether they are of vegetarian or non-vegetarian origin.
The new regulations amend the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011, and came into effect from Monday. The move is aimed at helping consumers identify the origin of ingredients used in cosmetics and toiletry products.
Under the new rules, products of vegetarian origin will have to carry a green dot, while products of non-vegetarian origin will carry a red or brown dot.
The relevant symbol must be displayed at the top of the principal display panel of the package, making it easier for consumers to spot while purchasing the product.

This means consumers buying everyday personal-care products such as soaps, shampoos and toothpaste will be able to determine whether they contain ingredients of vegetarian or non-vegetarian origin by checking the designated symbol on the packaging.
The new labelling requirement expands the use of origin-related markings beyond food products and brings certain cosmetics and toiletry products under the updated packaging rules.
