Smartwatches that are required to be paired with smartphones are soon going to be passe. A new wearable device incorporating an embedded SIM card a.k.a eSIM is now commercially available for purchase in Italy. The futuristic smartwatch, called the Gear S2 Classic 3G, is branded by Samsung.

The Samsung Gear S2 Classic 3G (showcased earlier in the year) could also possibly be the world's first smartwatch featuring the eSIM. The USP of the innovation is that the smartwatch completely eliminates the need for a smartphone to do things such as make calls directly, receive text messages/notifications and respond to these, along with being able to send/receive emails, check out social networks and even monitor health/fitness-related personal information.

Samsung's Gear S2 Classic 3G runs on the Tizen operating platform, and features a circular matte finish on the exterior with a layer of metal.

The Samsung Gear S2 Classic 3G, jointly developed by Samsung, TIM and Gemalto, can be purchased at €399 (Rs.30,000). This deal seems quite competitive considering the rate at which modern smartwatches are being subject to innovation of late.

Folks at Gemalto are optimistic about the contribution of the eSIM towards the Internet of Things (IoT) innovation. The eSIM can also be used by people to port from one wireless carrier to another without having to change SIM cards every time. Also, activation of user-desired services on the eSIM takes place remotely.
