Shocker: Wikipedia Refers Congress MP L Rajagopal as 'PepperSpray Rajagopal'
After he was collectively condemned for using peppery spray in the Parliament on Thursday, L Rajagopal has been referred as 'PepperSpray Rajagopal', even by Wikipedia.
In a hilarious turn of events after the pepper spray incident in Parliament on Thursday, Wikipedia - considered the most popular online encyclopedia - has referred to Congress MP L Rajagopal as 'PepperSpray Rajagopal'.
The Wiki page, which appears to be new, describes basic information on the MP as the "15th Lok Sabha member of Parliament from the Vijaywada constituency".
It goes on to highlight the Parliament incident with a headline "2014 Telangana row in Parliament". The most hilarious part of the page, however, is the box on the right hand side which labels the MP as 'PepperSpray Rajagopal' instead of 'Lagadapati Rajagopal'. His real name appears only on the main tab on the left.
The Parliament, on Thursday, had witnessed unprecedented chaos over the Telangana Bill, with Congress MP Rajagopal using pepper spray, while another MP flung a computer, and another one tried to pull out a microphone.
The incident sparked an overwhelming amount of public outrage with many media outlets claiming that the day will go down in history as one of most shameful days in India's history. A spate of tweets surfaced on the micro-blogging site, with the hash tag #PepperSpray, wherein people collectively condemned the incident.
The hashtag topped in all India trends on Thursday, and was also the most trending subject throughout Friday. Users criticised the incident through outraged - and sometimes funny - tweets.
The Twitter frenzy was nothing short of what was expectedv but the Wikipedia article that mocked the MP was a surprise, and 'PepperSpray Rajagopal' has now become more popular than the MP's real name.
Though Wikipedia is not considered a reliable source of information for scholars and researchers, the encyclopedia has a huge number of followers. The website is often visited when people need to have a quick look into any important background information.
The site claims to have over 71,000 active editors and 20,732,639 accounts. It is ranked number 6 among all the websites in the world, according to Alexa.
