A school bus in the town of Bishnah in Jammu skidded off the road killing a girl child and injuring 16 others, two of whom are critically injured. The driver is said to have lost control of the bus.
The District Collector has ordered a magisterial inquiry.
Twelve-year-old Khushboo lost her life, while 16 others were wounded.
"Doctors have referred six critically injured students to Government Medical College Hospital in Jammu city," a police official was quoted by IANS as saying.
The chief medical officer of Jammu rushed three ambulances to Bishnah on being informed about the accident so that the students could be sent to the hospital without delay.
