A video from the Bangladeshi capital of Dhaka shows bicycle taxi drivers cycling through a river of blood after flood waters combined with blood from the recent Eid slaughter turning the streets red. Muslims mark the annual holiday by killing a goat or a sheep.

Authorities in Dhakahad set aside certain areas in the city for killing the animals. However, heavy rainfall and poor drainage meant the blood, most of it on side streets where residents slaughtered their animals in car parks and garages, did not drain away.

The festival of Eid al-Adha commemorates the willingness of the prophet Ibrahim — or Abraham as he is known in the Bible — to sacrifice his son in accordance with Gods will, although, in the end, God provided him with a sheep to sacrifice instead.

The name of the religious day is translated as festival of the sacrifice. On the first day of Eid al-Adha, Muslims slaughter sheep, cattle and other livestock, and give part of the meat to the poor.
