Overview

Lin Dan was one of the firm favourites to make it to the final two of the mens event in Rio. However, the 32-year-olds hope of clinching his third consecutive gold in the Olympics was crushed when he lost the first semi-final clash against Lee Chong Wei.

The Chinese star took the lead after winning the first set 21-15. However, Chong Wei made a comeback as he won the second and third set to seal the match. That saw the Malaysian seal a berth in the final in a nail-biting finish.

Chong Weis latest victory has assured him of at least a silver at the ongoing summer Olympics. The final scoreline was 21-15, 11-21, 22-20. He will be facing Dans compatriot Cheng Long in the final. Had Dan won his semi-final clash, China would have bagged gold and silver.

Meanwhile, Long had no trouble in beating Axelsen in the second semi-final of the mens event. He won in straight sets as the final scoreline was 21-14, 21-15, with the match lasting for 48 minutes.

Dan and Axelsen will be challenging for bronze in the mens singles badminton event on Saturday. The winner of the clash will clinch the bronze medal in Rio.
