Overview

Nigeria have upset the odds and made it to the latter stages of the competition and are looking for their third Olympic medal in football when they take on Honduras for the bronze medal on Saturday. The Super Eagles were not fancied to make it to the final rounds at the start of the tournament as they took on more fancied Japan and Colombia in the group stages. They negotiated their way out from the group with wins over Sweden and the Asian U23 champions, and then beat Denmark in the quarter-finals. Samson Siasias team lost out to Germany in the semi-finals despite showing good form going into the last four clash.

Honduras, on the other hand, have surprised themselves and the world by fighting their way into medal contention and will be going into the match with nothing to lose as the African nation will be favourites to take the final step on the podium. Jose Luis Pintos team saw off two-time gold medal winners Argentina to qualify alongside Portugal from group D, and then beat South Korea in the quarter-finals before falling heavily to hosts Brazil in the last four.

The two teams have met in the Olympics before and it was at the Sydney games in 2000. It was a group stage clash which ended in a thrilling 3-3 draw. It is the first medal match for Honduras, while it also a first bronze medal match for the Nigerians after having played two finals in 1996 and 2008.
