Panihati BJP MLA and mother of the RG Kar rape-murder victim, Ratna Debnath, has said that those found guilty in the case will face action, while expressing concern over the pace of the ongoing investigation.
Debnath has repeatedly questioned the progress of the CBI probe into the 2024 rape and murder of her daughter, a postgraduate trainee doctor who was found dead at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9, 2024. She has demanded that everyone found involved in the case should be brought to justice.
Speaking about the investigation, Debnath questioned why doctors suspected of involvement could not be arrested if there was sufficient evidence against them. She said her daughter was also a doctor and stressed that anyone found guilty should face action.
"Some aspects of the justice process are not moving forward at all," Debnath had said, expressing her dissatisfaction with the pace of the investigation. She also said that the system needed to change and called for a more effective probe.
Her remarks come amid renewed developments in the RG Kar case. The West Bengal Police recently arrested former Panihati municipality chairman Somnath Dey in Bengaluru in connection with a fresh FIR related to the alleged hurried cremation of the victim's body. Dey has been accused along with former Trinamool Congress MLA Nirmal Ghosh and another person in connection with the circumstances surrounding the cremation.
The arrests followed a fresh investigation into allegations surrounding the handling of the victim's body after her death. The victim's father had filed a complaint alleging that pressure was exerted on the family to take the body for cremation despite their unwillingness.
The CBI continues to investigate the original rape and murder case. The Calcutta High Court has also directed the agency to complete its investigation within three weeks, with the matter scheduled to come up for hearing on September 24.
The RG Kar case has continued to draw widespread attention nearly two years after the doctor's death, with the victim's family seeking action against everyone allegedly involved and demanding that the investigation reach its logical conclusion.
