Bollywood has regularly come up with several films related to Indian Independence. Swades, Lagaan, Border, Mother India and many other flicks portrayed the struggle and story of the country's freedom fighters.

On the eve of Republic Day, let's take a look at the superstars of the Hindi film industry who played freedom fighters on screen.

Deepika Padukone

Actress Deepika Padukone appeared on the big screen as Kalpana Datta in the film "Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey." It is based on the Chittagong Uprising of 1930 where Datta was the part of the armed resistance movement led by Surya Sen.

Aamir Khan

In "Mangal Pandey", Aamir Khan brought out the story of a soldier who rebelled against the British during the 1857 revolt.

Apart from that, Aamir has been a part of "Lagaan" and "Rang De Basanti", also perceived as patriotic films. In "Rang De Basanti", along with Aamir, Siddharth, Kunal Kapoor, Sharman Joshi and Soha Ali Khan, portrayed the characters of Chandrashekhar, Bhagat Singh, Ashfaqullah Khan, Rajguru and Durga Vohra respectively.

Ajay Devgn

When it comes to playing the role of Bhagat Singh, nobody could have portrayed the character better than Ajay Devgn. He was the ideal choice for "The Legend of Bhagat Singh."

Abhishek Bachchan

Abhishek Bachchan was put into the shoes of Surya Sen in Ashutosh Gowariker's "Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey" which is based on the Chittagong Uprising of 1930. Surya Sen was an Indian independence activist and trained a group of youngsters in martial arts, shooting and making of bombs.

Sachin Khedekar

Shyam Benegal's directorial "Bose: The Forgotten Hero" is based on the story of renowned freedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose who later formed the Indian National Army (Azad Hind Fauj). Well-known actor Sachin Khedekar gave a stellar performance as Netaji in the movie.

Manoj Kumar

From "Shaheed" to "Purab Aur Paschim" to "Kranti", the 'Bhaarat Kumar' of the Indian film industry, Manoj Kumar, became a trend-setter for roles associated with freedom fighters. He in fact was awarded the Padma Shree by the Government of India in 1992.
