A Delhi court on Wednesday framed rape charges against "Peepli Live" director Mahmood Farooqui, who is accused of sexually assaulting an American woman.

Additional Sessions Judge Sanjiv Jain framed rape charges against Farooqui and posted the matter for 9 September for begining the trial.

The court will record the statement of the complainant on 14 September and, therefore, it kept Farooqui's bail plea pending till then. Farooqui is in judicial custody since 20 June .

In July, Delhi Police charge-sheeted Farooqui under sections dealing with rape and destruction of evidence for allegedly raping the 35-year-old American woman.

The woman, who is pursuing PhD from Columbia University, was in India for research work.

Meanwhile, wife of Farooqui in June had said that the rape charges against him are not true.

"The complaint is manipulated and false. We don't want to make any further comments on the matter because the case is under investigation. We will wait for the court's decision where the actual truth of the matter will come out. In the meanwhile we are thankful for the show of support from friends, colleagues and well wishers," Anusha said in a statement.
