Prepaid mobile users in India are set to get more flexibility in choosing recharge plans after new telecom consumer protection rules were introduced. Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha welcomed the move, saying it would give consumers greater choice and help reduce unnecessary spending on mobile services.

What are the new prepaid recharge rules?

Under the new rules, telecom operators will have to offer 30-day prepaid recharge plans, giving users an alternative to the commonly available 28-day validity plans.

The change could mean that users opting for a monthly 30-day plan will need to make 12 recharges in a year, instead of potentially making 13 recharges with a 28-day plan.

For example, a 28-day plan does not cover an entire calendar month. Over 365 days, users may need around 13 recharge cycles. A 30-day plan, on the other hand, can be renewed once every month, allowing users to recharge 12 times a year.

The new rules also provide for monthly renewable plans, which can be renewed on the same date every month.

Voice and SMS-only recharge plans

Another major change is the requirement for telecom operators to offer voice and SMS-only prepaid vouchers.

This means customers who do not need mobile data will be able to choose plans that focus only on calling and SMS instead of paying for bundled data services.

The new rules provide for such vouchers with shorter validity periods, including 30-day options, as well as longer-validity options.

Why Raghav Chadha welcomed the move

Chadha highlighted the introduction of 30-day recharge plans and said the change could help consumers avoid the additional recharge cycle created by 28-day plans.

He had earlier raised the issue in Parliament after consumers approached him over limited and inflexible prepaid recharge options. Chadha thanked the government and TRAI for addressing the concern.

The changes are aimed at giving prepaid users more choice over the type and duration of services they pay for, particularly those who do not require data-heavy plans.

What this means for mobile users

The new rules do not mean that every existing recharge plan will automatically become cheaper or that all users will only need 12 recharges a year.

Instead, telecom operators will have to provide additional options, including 30-day and monthly renewable plans. Users can then choose a plan based on their usage and recharge requirements.

For consumers, the key difference is simple: 28-day plans can result in 13 recharge cycles over a year, while a genuine monthly 30-day option allows for 12 recharge cycles.
