AS Roma edged Liverpool in a preseason friendly at Fenway Park, while Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur registered wins on Wednesday in the United States, and Chelsea were held to a draw.

In Boston, Marco Borriello scored the only goal in the 90th minute, as Roma prevailed over Liverpool 1-0. An out-swinging corner kick took deflection from Agger and Borriello with the ball landing up in the net.

Both teams fielded a strong lineup, with new signings Rickie Lambert and Emre Can starting for the Reds while ex-Chelsea player Ashley Cole featured for the Italians. Cole created the first chance of the match in 33rd minute, when he sent a cross to Francesco Totti but he volleyed it over Brad Jones.

Lambert created an opening for Liverpool in the second half and tested goalkeeper Lukasz Skorupski just inside the box but the Pole managed to keep the Serie A team in the contest.

Antonio Sanabria almost scored for the Italian team in the 89th minute but a timely save by Jones kept the scoreline 0-0, before the final minute saw the winner.

More than the loss, Liverpool manager Brendon Rodgers will be worried by an injury to Fabio Borini, who fell awkwardly on his shoulder in the 12th minute and had to be substituted.

Meanwhile, the Premier League champions Manchester City registered a thumping 4-1 win over Major League Soccer's (MLS) Eastern Conference leaders Sporting Kansas City.

City set the tempo when Bruno Zuculini opened the scoring in the third minute of the match. However, Sporting Kansas City replied immediately, when CJ Sapong's volley hit the crossbar and Dom Dwyer's goal was ruled offside.

Sapong scored the equaliser for the home team in the 30th minute but at the stroke of halftime Dedryck Boyata restored City's lead. Sal Zizzo created a number chances for Kansas and also sent a diving header into the box but Michael Kafari failed to deliver the final touch.

The Premier League champions played aggressively and increased their lead to 3-1 through Aleksandar Kolarov, who scored from the penalty spot, when Kafari fouled on Scott Sinclair. Kelechi Iheanacho completed a 4-1 victory in the 88th minute for Manuel Pellegrini's men.

In another preseason friendly, Tottenham Hotspur played another entertaining match to beat Toronto FC 3-2 on Wednesday night.

Club-record signing Erik Lamela scored a brace, while his replacement Andros Townsend struck a late winner to help Spurs register a hard-fought win over Toronto.

Spurs controlled the proceedings and Lamela scored a delightful left-footer in the 15th minute, after Christian Eriksen and Roberto Soldado combined to send a weighted pass to the former Roma Player.

Lamela then doubled the lead in the 39th minute from the same spot when Soldado and Aaron Lennon outpaced Toronto's defense.

The home team, however, fought-back in the second half, as Andrew Wiedeman (65th minute) and Jordan Hamilton (73rd minute) levelled the scoreline. But a curling shot from Townsend in the 85th minute ensured that the Premier League team walk off with a win.
