But The Tooting MP must first beat some of his Labour colleagues, like David Lammy and Diane Abbott, to win the partys candidacy.

Khan, 44, also attacked Boris Johnson when he launched his campaign. He criticised the Tory incumbent for being a celebrity red-carpet representative.

In contrast, Khan told the Evening Standard that he would roll up his sleeves and fight for all Londoners.

Lib Dem fightback after harrowing election night

Finally, the Liberal Democrats have seen the number of their new members post-election surge past 10,000.

The sign-ups come after the yellow outfit was left with just eight MPs in the House of Commons and no leader after Nick Clegg resigned.
